Helping Good People At Their Worst Times

I have been a Navy wife for 18 years. Do I receive any of my husband’s retirement and do I keep health insurance coverage after the divorce?

You are entitled to one-half of the retirement your husband earned during your marriage regardless of the number of years married.  Your health insurance coverage, however, will only remain after the divorce if you were married 20 years of his service, not one day less. The United States military requires the divorced spouse of a servicemember to be married (into the military so to speak) for at least 20 years of his/her service. You may be entitled to a short period of coverage paid for by the military, generally one year. After that time, COBRA coverage is available for up to 36 months.
