How long does a divorce take?

A divorce must take at least 20 days from the date of filing, absent extraordinary circumstances.  The truth is, a divorce can take weeks or even years.  It all depends on what the issues of contention are, who opposing counsel is and which judge has your case.  If child custody is at issue or alimony, accept that you may be waiting. Those issues may take longer because you need time to complete discovery.  Depositions may need to be taken, subpoenas issued, or experts may need to be retained.  All of that takes time.
