How long do I have to live in Florida to get divorced here?

On Behalf of | Dec 5, 2014 | Family Law

Florida requires that in order to obtain a divorce here, you must be a resident for 6 months. There are different ways to show that you have in fact moved here, for instance: the day you changed your driver’s license, utility hookup bills, your voter registration card or even your lease or closing document from a new house. It is important to be able to prove your residency because if your spouse still resides in the state you previously lived or even if they moved here but don’t want the divorce, they can contest your residency and dismiss your divorce. There of course is an exception. If you are a United States Servicemember and your home state it Florida, it doesn’t matter if you live here during the divorce or before.
